How Dental Insurance Works

If looking through your dental insurance policy is giving you a headache, put down the paperwork and call our team. We are always happy to review your policy and help you to better understand your dental insurance coverage. Every plan is different, but in most cases, patients will pay a monthly premium to an insurer. In return for the payment of this monthly fee, your insurer covers a percentage of the cost of your necessary dentistry services up to annual plan maximum. Typically, patients have the flexibility to choose a greater percentage of coverage or a wider range of covered treatments in exchange for slightly higher monthly premiums. In most cases, patients will receive the following coverage for their dental insurance benefits:

Types of Dental Insurance

There are to main types of dental insurance – health maintenance organizations (HMO) and preferred provider organizations (PPO). HMO plans place strict limitations on the dental offices patients can visit and what treatments will be covered. PPO plans are created to offer flexibility, allowing patients to receive coverage when visiting any office.

In-Network Insurance

For HMO plans, you must visit a dentist within your provider network to receive coverage from the insurer. The PPO plan network is a little different. You’ll likely receive coverage at any dental office of your choice. However, in-network practices charge fees that fall within your insurer’s fair and average pricing. Out of network dentists may charge fees that are higher than your insurer’s set price range, but you’ll need to pay the difference in pricing as well as the out of pocket percentage of the cost of your treatment. While these differences in pricing are usually minimal, visiting an in-network provider allows you to avoid any additional fees.

What does In-Network Mean?

For PPO dental insurance plans, in-network doesn’t necessarily mean you can only visit a specific group of dental offices. Instead, visiting an in-network dental team simply means that you will have the minimum out of pocket fees because the dentist has an agreement with your insurer to charge fees that fall within the range considered fair by the insurance provider. That means you’ll receive the maximum benefits and avoid additional fees.

Our In-Network Dental Plans

While PPO plans do not require you to visit an in-network dentist, choosing a dental office that is in-network with your insurer may reduce the stress related to the cost of visiting the dentist. We are happy to offer in-network dental insurance coverage for the following plans:
