Keep These Travel Tips in Mind!

Woman brushing her teeth

Dr. Raj and the team at Center One Dental wants to wish its patients a happy holiday season and safe travels to anyone spending their holiday outside of their home.

During the holiday season, we understand that getting to the airport on time and settling into your extended family’s guest room is likely a higher priority than your oral care habits. However, traveling for the holidays makes it incredibly easy to fall out of habits you’ve established at home, including brushing and flossing in the morning and evening.

That’s why, for the final newsletter of the year, we wanted to highlight a few important travel tips to consider as you spend time away from the humble abode. After all, you’re going to be exposed to foods harmful for your teeth more than ever before, so it’s worth it if it means avoiding cavities by New Year’s Day!

Tip #1: Keep a Backup Oral Hygiene Kit

Travel tolietries

In the event that your luggage is lost or stolen, you shouldn’t have to buy new products just to keep your oral health in check. That’s why it’s always better to have a backup toothbrush, floss, toothpaste and mouth wash inside your carry-on luggage. Just make sure that the toothpaste and mouth wash you bring doesn’t exceed what TSA allows in carry-on bags.

Tip #2: Keep Your Toothbrush Dry

Many stores will sell toothbrush cases that cover the head of your toothbrush. Others are large enough to fit the entire brush itself. However, these containers only breed bacteria because moisture will often stay on the brush for long periods of time. As soon as you arrive at your hotel or family member’s home, make sure to take it out of its travel container to let it dry out naturally.

Tip #3: Keep Your Hands Busy

When you’re sitting in a plane, car or train for long periods of time, it can be easy to fall back into habits that helped you relieve stress. One of the most common habits is nail-biting, which can wear down your enamel as you chew away on your fingers. Instead, keep your hands in your pockets or go on your phone. Keep a good book in your hands to prevent them moving towards you mouth. Distractions like these can dramatically help you reduce the stresses from traveling.

Tip #4: Use the Right Tool for the Job

If you need to wrap gifts or open up some pistachios or walnuts, it’s imperative that you don’t resort to using your mouth to open them. Teeth may be made from enamel, which is the strongest substance in the human body. But that doesn’t mean it can handle tasks that a pair of scissors or nutcracker should be used for. Doing this will also help you prevent a dental emergency, which you do not want to experience while traveling hundreds or thousands of miles away from our office.

The team at Center One Dental only wants the best for your oral health, which is why we highlight these tips as you create your travel plans. We hope that your visit with family and friends is a positive one and wish all of our patients a happy holidays!
